CIGAR BOX BULLETIN
Volume 56, No. 20 September 17, 2008
RMA members responded enthusiastically to JOHN CRAINE’s (pres MIKE RYAN’S backup today) precise 9:30am bell. Sure is nice to have a precise bell here, not like the clanky bell that has been playing on Wall Street recently! JOHN PHILLIPS then led us in the Pledge after giving us a history lesson about it. Maestro GRAN BURGESS, accompanied by JIM SANTORA, directed our singing of my personal favorite, the inspirational God Bless America followed by Bye Bye Blackbird, and Smiles. Rec/Cor Secy BILL DYNAN reviewed last week’s CBB, presented a couple of post cards, and gave us a few chuckles with a story about a trio of ladies and responses they received to their individual effort to put more spice in their lives.

TODAY'S PROGRAM: JOHN de CSEPEL introduced a nuclear physicist, Stephen Myers, PhD, who also happens to be an RMA member. Steve opened by saying the two best ways to clean out an audience from an auditorium is to yell “fire”, or to announce a 30 minute speech would be given about Nuclear Weapons. Steve, you were wrong, but maybe only because of your presentation skills! He then went on, telling us about the magnitude of the world’s existing arsenal of such weapons, who has them, and especially discussing certain of those countries with questionable motives or stability issues. Proliferation and a nuclear “event” are frightening specters, and there are respected world figures that are thinking about solutions. One of which is a vision of a nuclear free world, which would need to be built over many years with international trust, broad cooperation, and absolute verification. Yes, there is a risk, but then the odds may be better than on the current path the world is now on. This was a most intriguing and thought provoking presentation.
