CIGAR BOX BULLETIN
Volume 55, No. 16 August 15, 2007
The school bell was rung promptly at 10:00 AM by President RICH LIMBACHER, followed by the Pledge led by FRANK ZAVATTARO. CHUCK LIVINGSTON led us in It’s a Grand Old Flag, It’s a Sin To Tell A Lie, and Darktown Strutters Ball. All this to the playing of the ivories by BOB ALDEN. BILL DYNAN, our double duty secretary, briefly outlined the minutes from last week and gave us many definitions of growing old.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: JOHN CRAINE reminded us of the annual picnic on September 6, 11 AM at the Clambake Area at Greenwich Point --- rain or shine! PETER SCHIEFERDECKER told us of the appointment of Sally VanLeeuwen as the Volunteer Coordinator at Nathaniel Witherell. He also cited the need for volunteers at Witherell for different functions from administrative to one-on-one work with patients. Call Peter or Ms VanLeeuwen. GRAHAM WHITEHEAD gave us a “heads up” for the annual raft-up on August 30 at Greenwich Cove. More skippers are needed for the number of available crew.
RETURNEES: We welcomed back HARRY TWITCHELL from railways of New England, AL HARTIG from Northern Wisconsin, and GENE SCHWARTZ from Berlin and part of eastern Europe.
COMMITTEE REPORTS: Visiting: DICK HERMANCE gave us the welcome news that no one was in the hospital. Membership: JIM FAHY reported that attendance was 130 members and one candidate, GRANVILLE BURGESS. We sang a rousing Happy Birthday to: STEPHEN BONSAL 72, BOB UNDERWOOD 81, BILL BOOM 91, NICK MECCA 79, BILL CORDNER 89, DICK BARTHOLOMEW 70, GENE SCHWARTZ 74. HARRY TWITCHELL reported 584 volunteer hours to outside agencies by 58 men and 77 hours to RMA duties by 22 men. Program: BILL HORTON, subbing for TOM HEALY, confirmed that the Goodspeed Opera and Botanical Garden events are both on ticket exchange. Luncheon selections for the Goodspeed trip are due this week ----- Penne Pasta, Roast Chicken Breast, Brisket of Beef, or Cold Poached Salmon (I’ll have one of each).
PLAY TIME: Bridge: HAP HEYMAN reported high scores for the week were: HUGO GRUNDEL 2420, JOHN HOFFMAN 2100 and LEN SAARI 1800. Golf: REID MC INTYRE reported that there were 31 players with JACK KABCENELL and JIM SANTORA closest to the pin on 7 and 15 respectively; REID MC INTYRE had the longest drive on 17 and the low gross scores came from REID MC INTYRE 78 (Tiger look out), BOB MC KAY 82, and DICK BARTHOLOMEW 89.
TODAY’S PROGRAM: BOB STONE introduced Lloyd Hubbs Greenwich Commissioner of Public Works who proceeded to talk trash. Actually he told us there is a lot of garbage in Greenwich --- was there ever a doubt? Currently we pay Wheelabrator, the owners of the Bridgeport facility, $76 per ton for 80,000 tons of solid waste per year. The contract expires December 31, 2008 and so negotiations are now ongoing. In addition the town is exploring other options. One of the surprises to many of us was that our trash haulers pay a small license fee per truck, but nothing further, to use the Holly Hill facility. Recycling is also undergoing study for a more cost effective system. Because Greenwich has very good recyclers, we are subsidizing other towns that don’t do as much. We spend about $8,000,000 per year, most going to Bridgeport, but also for yard waste, recycling, etc. While Greenwich has a lot of garbage, the talk was not trashy at all ---- in fact it was quite interesting.
