Meeting 03/26/03

CIGAR BOX BULLETIN

Volume 50, No. 44                March 26, 2003

On a beautiful spring-like day President Bill Lehren opened the meeting with
a really short agenda in hand.  This is the kind of situation that your Cigar
Box Editors dream about.  Very little "real meat" on the slate and no
long-winded speeches in prospect.  Thus the CBB Editor finds himself to be in
the unusual position where he has room to write a little freer and is not
pre-empted by the need to write long lists of names of worthies who have done
something that needs to be recorded for posterity.  On the other hand, a
short agenda complicates the task of the Recording Secretary who thrives on
dwelling on the small and often unusual details of our weekly gatherings.
The Pledge was lead by Joe Robinson.  He was followed by our crack musical
team of Bob Preis - arm waver, and Ernest Banker - piano.  In the spirit of
the complicated situation our Nation finds itself in they asked us to sing
America - two verses, the second one to honor our allies said Bob, Yankee
Doodle Boy and You're a Grand Old Flag.  After this melodious warm-up, it was
the turn of your Editor in his role as Recording Secretary.  The return to
the fold of Corresponding Secretary, Wayne Wright was greeted with a round of
applause or was it relief after a spell of two sessions with clean jokes?
Wayne had three postcards as he put it "ranging from tasty to tasteful and
totally tasteless."  The prize went to Bill Eustis who wrote he had found the
"definitive tasteless Florida card."  Quality is always worth the effort
Wayne added.  He then told a story about a couple driving a marriage
counselor to distraction.

Announcements:  Our President then said the time had come to vote on the
slate of officers put forth by the Nominating Committee and carried in last
week's CBB (with the notation that the 3rd Vice President wishes his name to
be listed as Samuel J. Marasso Jr.)  Candidates were asked to stand up and
come forward when their names were called and were told to line up in police
line-up fashion.  Upon a motion to cast one vote for the entire slate, which
was seconded and carried, the election of the new officers was approved
unanimously by the membership.  After this momentous happening, Dick
Radcliffe spoke about an event organized by the Perrot Library featuring
music and Donald Davis, a "story teller," who seems to be very good and funny
in the style of Garrison Keillor.  There is enormous interest in this
performance, which had to be moved to a larger venue and will now be held at
Eastern Middle School on April 24 at 7:30 PM.  Dick has a few free tickets
left. Graham Whitehead came on the podium to report he and Jeff Parker and
their spouses had returned in one piece from a trip to Cuba. On first sight
they did not seem to be brainwashed, but the future will tell if this is
true.  Referring to his upcoming end of term, President Lehren  then produced
some philosophical insights dealing with the state of mind of the average RMA
member in the vein of "Funny I don't remember being absent-minded."
Returnees:  Wayne Wright back from Laguna Beach, CA; Bill Lehren from Stowe,
VT; Tom Schwartz from the Poconos, PA; Graham Whitehead from Cuba; Tom Healy
from St. Thomas; Roger Pierce - VT & NH and Jeff Parker - Cuba and Trinidad.

Committee Reports: Visiting - Bob Preis reporting on our friends who were
under the weather, said that to his delight there was nobody in hospital.  To
top it all off, two made it back to the meeting.  Applause welcomed Phil Hahn
and Charlie Sweatt.  Program - Bill Eustis previewed today's speaker (see
below) and announced that next week we will hear Paul Connelly, Emergency
Coordinator for the Town of Greenwich, a new function that is more than
timely.  Membership - Loring Webber reported total attendance at 172, 165

Zboray gave us the following scores: Court #1 Leon Freeman 11 games (hip hip
